Maureen Brundage has incomparable experience in leading global legal teams and advising management and corporate boards, serving more than a decade at an industry-leading multinational company, after a successful career as a partner and practice group leader at an international law firm. Most recently, as Executive Vice President, General Counsel, Corporate Secretary & Chief Ethics Officer of The Chubb Corporation, one of the largest publicly traded property and casualty insurers, operating in 25 countries, Maureen led a 135-person global team, overseeing legal, regulatory, compliance and corporate secretarial functions. Prior to joining Chubb, Maureen was a partner at White & Case LLP, where she headed the Global Securities Law Practice Group and a global staff of more than 150 lawyers.
Utilizing her deep expertise in legal department management, including organizational structure optimization, change management, succession planning, cost management, efficiency enhancement and development initiatives, Maureen can provide clients with the objective insights and creative thinking they are seeking for their legal departments. Both her corporate background and her more recent advisory experience give Maureen the ability to understand the pressing needs of today’s General Counsel. Knowing first-hand the importance of developing and maintaining a strategic focus, Maureen guides legal executives to achieve the delicate balance of being a business partner, while at the same time acting as the guardian of the company and its shareholders. Also, her years of experience in developing and mentoring talent makes Maureen an invaluable resource to clients with coaching needs, whether for themselves or members of their team.
One of Maureen’s most noteworthy accomplishments was her critical role in Chubb’s $28 billion acquisition including involvement in negotiations, integration planning, internal communication, and transition management. During her tenure, besides her oversight of legal, regulatory and corporate secretarial matters, Maureen spearheaded numerous risk and compliance initiatives, including creating an award-winning compliance and ethics program; establishing a regulatory compliance group; developing worldwide anti-bribery guidelines; enhancing economic sanctions compliance procedures; and implementing a global enterprise risk management assessment process. Within the legal department, she also revitalized its functioning, productivity, efficiency, and morale through various restructurings and innovative development initiatives. Beyond her role as the company’s legal leader, Maureen was involved in diversity and mentoring activities across the Chubb organization. In addition to serving as an advisor to Chubb’s Hispanic & Latino Employee Group and a frequent conference speaker for Chubb’s many women’s organizations, Maureen mentored individuals both inside and outside of the company.
As head of White & Case’s Global Securities Law Practice Group, Maureen improved communication and morale within the group and enhanced its reputation inside of the firm and among its clients. Maureen also represented domestic and international companies in diverse industries with regard to securities offerings, mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and other corporate transactions, as well as advising on corporate governance, crisis management, SEC reporting, and general corporate matters.
Currently serving on the Board of Directors and Audit Committee of MAPFRE U.S.A. Corp., the U.S. holding company of MAPFRE S.A., the global insurance company, Maureen is also a Director and Audit Committee Member of MAPFRE’s subsidiaries: The Commerce Insurance Company, Massachusetts’ largest private passenger automobile insurance writer; and Citation Insurance Company. In addition, she serves on the Board of Jersey Battered Women’s Service, Inc., is Chair of the Compensation Committee and a member of its CEO Search Committee.
Along with her consulting, advisory and coaching activities as a Senior Advisor with BarkerGilmore, Maureen is a Program Director for The Conference Board; Corporate Advisor to The Dana Foundation; and Senior External Editor of Cerebrum, The Dana Foundation’s monthly journal. An accomplished speaker, she frequently presents on such topics as risk and strategy in the boardroom, leadership, cybersecurity governance and managing mergers.
Maureen received a B.A. in Economics from Fordham University, summa cum laude, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. A graduate of New York University School of Law, she was editor-in-chief of its Annual Survey of American Law. She also attended The London School of Economics.
