Learn what it takes to elevate your career from in-house counsel to GC or Chief Legal Officer. Our survey of over 300 aspiring legal leaders contains valuable insights into what factors are most important for being identified by management as a potential successor to an existing General Counsel. We put together this report to provide candidates with some of the latest insights to help those aspiring toward senior-level legal positions.

1. Succession Planning and Impact on Employee Retention

According to those surveyed, 42% of Managing Counsel were identified as potential candidates for General Counsel while only 11% of Senior Counsel were identified. Identification of Managing Counsel did not stop them from pursuing other opportunities while identified Senior Counsel were less likely to seek other opportunities outside of the organization.

2. Professional Development Opportunities

Identified successors tend to receive more professional development compared to their peers. These include expanded responsibilities, exposure to the board, leadership training, and stretch assignments. Such opportunities are crucial for grooming potential successors for the complexities and responsibilities of the General Counsel role.

3. Diversity of Candidates

The report shows an increased number of women and individuals from diverse racial and ethnic groups as potential General Counsel successors, reflecting a trend toward more inclusive succession planning.
