As a recipient of the prestigious 2017 Burton Award, Cornell Boggs is a recognized “Legend in Law.” In association with The Library of Congress, and co-sponsored by the American Bar Association, this honor is bestowed on those General Counsel who are considered to be the best in the legal profession and have “a demonstrated track record of addressing complex matters.” Not only does this distinction make Cornell part of an elite circle of nationally recognized legal leaders, but it defines the level of excellence he offers to his clients.
An accomplished General Counsel and Corporate Secretary experienced in all aspects of corporate law, Cornell has also held positions as Chief Responsibility and Ethics Officer, and Chief Legal Officer/Group Vice President, Public Affairs for global corporations. Most recently serving as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Toys “R” Us, he managed the global legal function. Prior to that role, as Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of Dow Corning Corporation, the world’s largest silicone product producer, he led Global Legal, Government Affairs, and Corporate Security and served as Chief Compliance Officer, while reporting to the Chief Executive Officer. He also has experience in a variety of industries including Miller Coors LLC/Coors Brewing Company; Tyco Plastics & Adhesives, a $1.74B division of the diversified global company Tyco International Ltd; Intel Corporation; and, early in his career, the Anheuser-Busch and Monsanto Companies.
With his deep corporate background, Cornell is valued by executive management and boards of directors for his astute business insight, vision, global experience, leadership, and commitment to accountability. These skills allow him to assist legal departments in achieving their goals during times of transformation, while helping them formulate plans to optimize their organizations and increase corporate revenue.
A graduate of Valparaiso University and Valparaiso University Law School, Cornell currently serves on the Board of Directors of his alma mater, where he is Vice Chairman of the Audit Committee and a member of the Executive Committee. He is also on the Board of Thrivent Financial, and previously served on the boards of the Association of Corporate Counsel and the Minority Corporate Counsel Association.
Active in many organizations, he served as an Accreditation Site Review team member for the University of San Diego School of Law, Baylor University Law School, and the University of Notre Dame. He is also a Member of both the Executive Leadership Council (ELC) and the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD). Previously he was a member of the American Bar Association’s Standards Review Committee for the Accreditation of U.S. Law Schools.
Cornell was named one of the “Most Influential People in Valparaiso University’s 150-year History” in 2009. Savoy magazine cited him as one of the “Top 100 Influential Blacks in Corporate America” in 2014, and as one of the “Most Influential Black Lawyers in America” in 2015.
